William Robert DeRue OLoughlin, 75, of Newark Valley, passed away suddenly on Dec. 22, 2014. Bill is survived by his sons: Herb (Gina Levia) OLoughlin, Ray and Tammy OLoughlin, Glenn R. (Lisa M. Doran) OLoughlin, DeRue and Mary OLoughlin, daughters: Kelly Frederick (Gary)Sweet and Renee Carman;his sister, Phyllis Zimmer Bynes. Also surviving is Bills loving and long-time companion, Mary Jo Woodrow and her children: Martin, Chris, Amy; his grandchildren: Herb, Jr., Christopher, Shawn, Shannon, Davidson, Val, Danielle, Sorelle, Corey, Caleb, his 12 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and many friends. Bill was predeceased by his wife and love of his life, Sally Woodrow OLoughlin in 1996 and his son-in-law, Philip Carman.Bill was an avid race car fan. His mechanical racing career started in the early 60s with the late Bob King. In the mid-sixties he was a crew member for Amos Fanciulli. After Amos passed away, Bill began crewing for the legendary Jim Zacharias. Bills relationship with the Zacharias family owned team would continue through 3 generations of drivers and includes many feature event wins and championships. During his career, he would also have brief stints helping the teams of Dave Jackson, Scott Brady, and Rusty Smith. He was known for his tire set up. Bill quietly enjoyed being labeled as part of the team. His racing travels included many local tracks such as Glen Aubrey, the original and current Shangri-la Speedways, Chemung, Oswego, Trenton N.J., Pocono, Herb Harvey, Penn Cann, Thunder Mountain, Brewerton, Fulton, and Flemington Speedways. Bill was passionate while working very hard for these race teams as was evidenced by his huge smile in photos in the Victory Lane. Family and friends are invited to the MacPherson Funeral Home on Friday, Jan 2, 2015 to share stories and memories from 6-8 pm. A Memorial Service and Celebration of His Life will follow at at 8 PM.
