Wayner

September 29, 1962 — October 28, 2024

Wayne A. Riek, affectionately known as "Wayner" to his friends and family, left this world on October 28, 2024, at the age of 62. He was born on September 29, 1962.He was predeceased by his father, Arthur Riek, his mother Janice Gwardyak, and his daughter Laura Riek. He was also predeceased by his best friends Mike Jerkes and Richard Andrews.

Wayner's life was a testament to the joy of family and the great outdoors. He shared 10 years of love and laughter with his devoted wife, Leeann Riek, and was a proud father to his children: Ashley (Clint) Kadaronak, Michael (Ashley) Lee, Joseph Darrow, and he was a stepfather to Brandon Wood. His life was further enriched by the love of his grandchildren Devon, Izabella, Ayden, Samuel, Tristin, and Marcus, and he was overjoyed to see his legacy continue with his great-grandchildren Emma and Wyeitt. He is also survived by his stepmother Penny and stepfather Adam.

In addition, he is survived by his brothers Ed Riek, Kevin (Darcy) Riek, Tim (Amy) Gwardyak, and his sisters Carla (Mike) and Ellie Riek. He held a special place in his heart for his nephew Lucjan, whom he shared countless outdoor adventures with and his close friends Bobby Jordan and Floyd Clark. Family and friends were the cornerstone of his life.

He was an employee of SUNY Cortland, where his work ethic and camaraderie with his coworkers were greatly valued. A true outdoorsman, Wayner was happiest when he was hunting, fishing, or simply enjoying the serenity of nature at the Waterworks in Cortland. Camping trips and bluegrass festivals were among his favorite escapes, and his passion for metal detection often led him to discover hidden treasures. His garden, specifically his Morning Glory flowers, was a source of pride and a testament to his green thumb.

Wayner also found peace in reading, where he could immerse himself in stories and learn about the world from the comfort of his home. He shared a special bond with his Chiweenie dog, Alice, who was a constant companion and source of joy. Wayner was known for being a jokester with a heart of gold. His friendly demeanor and blunt honesty were balanced by his efforts to always be on his best behavior, a trait that endeared him to many. Funny and full of life, he had the rare ability to light up a room with his humor and warmth.
