Tom

December 3, 1948 — February 28, 2024

Thomas Frederick Grant, 75, son, husband, father, and grandfather passed away on February 28th, 2024 after a brief illness. He was born in Binghamton and was a life-long resident of Newark Valley, NY.

He graduated from the Newark Valley Central School District where he was a distinguished athlete. In wrestling he was the Section IV champion and the state runner-up in the Unlimited weight class. He later graduated from Wilkes College with a BS and MBA, and a CAS from SUNY Cortland.

Tom served honorably for four years in the U. S. Navy. He was proud to be a third generation IBMer, and later served several employers in finance and administrative capacities.

He genuinely enjoyed time with his family, taking photographs at every get together, clever quotations, computers, reading, regular visits to Annie’s Place, and expanding his family’s genealogy.

He is predeceased by his parents Laurence Thomas (Bud) and Lorraine Shrigley Grant, his in-laws Thomas and Mary Dziak, and his best friend Robert Schaffer.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years Mary Ellen (Meg) (Dziak) Grant, his daughter Mary Lorraine (Mollie), his son Laurence Thomas (LT) and his wife Krista, and the lights of his life, his grandchildren Caroline Ellen Grant and his namesake Thomas Frederick Grant III. He is also survived by Meg’s three brothers and their wives, two sisters, many cousins, nieces, nephews, and their families.

Calling Hours will be held at the MacPherson Funeral Home, 5 Whig Street, Newark Valley, NY on Sunday, March 3rd between 1 and 3pm, with a short service to follow.

Tom loved his local library. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Tappan-Spaulding Memorial Library, 6 Rock Street, Newark Valley, NY 13811, or Tioga County Rural Ministry, 143 North Avenue, Owego, NY 13827. Memories and condolences may be shared at www.macphersonfh.com

The family would like to express sincere thanks to the nurses, doctors, and staff of Wilson Hospital for their care and compassion over these trying past three weeks.

As Tom was taken too quickly and too soon, the family wishes to share his favorite quote from Walter de la Mare, “Look thy last on all things lovely, every hour.”
