Thomas A Mullen, 80, passed away following a brief illness on July 21, 2014. Tom is survived by his wife of 58 years, Virginia (Hover) Mullen; his son David (Ann) Mullen and daughter, Barbara ( Robert) Heinle. Also surviving are his grandchildren: Ryan (Rose) McCarthy, Kendra (Enis Ucer) McCarthy, Kevin McCarthy, Laura Mullen, Calvin, Timothy and Kimberly Heinle, Lisa (Michael) Thies, Kimberly (Brennan) Webster; 4 great grandchildren; brother-in-law, Leslie (Kay) Hover, Jr., step-sister, Betty (Robert) Hickey, several nieces, nephews and cousins. Tom was born on Sept. 27, 1933 in Brooklyn, NY the son of Norman and Mildred (Bonner) Mullen. He was a graduate of SUNY Albany, Class of 1955 and for 35 years was an instructor in Mathematics at Newark Valley Central Schools, retiring in 1991. While there, he also served as a Guidance Counselor and ran the clock for all of the basketball games. He was a 56 year member of the First United Methodist Church in Newark Valley; served his community as a former member of the Town Board and Fire Commissioner; and for the past 15 years, he served as a Board Member of Hope Cemetery Association. Tom and Ginny completed an extensive compilation of records dating back to the establishment of Hope Cemetery in 1820.He was an avid golfer and member of the Tioga Seniors Golf Assoc and had a passion for boating.Toms family will receive friends on Thursday from 4-7 pm at the MacPherson Funeral Home, Newark Valley. A Celebration of his life will be held there at 1 PM on Friday with his son-in-law, Rev. Robert H. Heinle officiating. Burial will follow in Hope Cemetery.
