Thelma H. Welch, a beacon of love and kindness, passed away peacefully on January 23, 2025, at Wilson Hospital in Johnson City, NY. Born on May 14, 1945, in the quaint town of Virgil, New York, Thelma's life was a testament to the power of caring and devotion. As Maya Angelou once said, "People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel." Thelma indeed left an indelible mark on the hearts of all who knew her.
Thelma's role as a homemaker was the cornerstone of her life, providing a warm and nurturing environment for her family. She was the beloved mother of Donald Welch (Deanna Vivant), John Welch (Amanda Zimmer-Welch), David (Wendy Mosher) Welch, Darin Welch (Sally Holcomb), Debbie (Brandon) Vainio, Donna (Mitch) O'Connell, Dawn Hales, and Diane (Brian) Sague and Jason Welch a special grandson whom, she raised. She was a cherished grandmother and great-grandmother, and loved the many blessings of her large and loving family.
Her siblings, Nelson (Debbie) Dillenbeck and Glenn Dillenbeck, will remember Thelma's unwavering support and the joy she brought to their lives. Thelma was greeted in heaven by her parents, Nelson and Hilda (Holt) Dillenbeck, her beloved husband of 30 years, Donald C. Welch, her daughter Doreen Wood, son Leon Welch and her brothers, Clarence and Ellis Dillenbeck.
Thelma's interests and hobbies brought sparkle to her everyday life. She was known for her love of music and dancing, moving with a rhythm that matched her vibrant spirit. Her visits to Tioga Downs Casino were legendary among her friends and family, often joking that a quick trip would invariably extend into hours of enjoyment. Thelma's dog, Molly, was a source of great comfort and companionship, embodying the unconditional love Thelma herself gave so freely.
To know Thelma was to experience love in its purest form. She was the epitome of a listening ear and a shoulder to lean on, always there for anyone in need. Her kindness was not just an attribute but a way of life that touched countless individuals.
Thelma's legacy is one of love, kindness, and the joy of simple pleasures. Her family, the picture of her life's work, stands as a testament to the love she shared and the values she instilled. We will gather with our family and friends on Friday, January 31st from 3 -4 pm for a period of visitation at the MacPherson Funeral Home, 5 Whig St., Newark Valley. A funeral service and celebration of her life will follow at 4 pm. Thelma will be laid to rest next to her husband Donald in the Hope Cemetery.
