Sam M. Chopiak

November 4, 1934 — October 22, 2023

Sam M. Chopiak, 88, a life-long resident of Newark Valley, passed away on Sunday, October 22, 2023 at his home. Sam was born on November 4, 1934, to the late Peter and Katherine (Wasylysyln) Chopiak and throughout his life, he would devote himself to his community and the land he loved.

Sam was a man of the soil; a farmer who was dedicated to the family dairy farm which he nurtured and grew. In addition to his farming career, Sam was an Air Force veteran, having served his country with honor and pride. His service to the nation was a testament to his character, demonstrating his commitment, bravery, and selflessness.

Beyond his professional life, Sam had a keen interest in auctions. He was a regular at auctions in the surrounding areas. Sam always enjoyed looking for a good deal and catching up with the friends he would see there.

On September 7, 2012, Sam’s heart was broken when his wife of 50 years, Mary Grace, passed away suddenly. We find comfort in knowing that Sam and Grace have finally been reunited.

Sam is survived by his children: Laurie (Bill) Yeomans, Sandra VanAlstine, Sharon (Mark) Crotsley and Bev (Ken) Battaglini, Daniel (Karen) Chopiak; his siblings: Martha, Nicholas, and Gloria; 14 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive.

In addition to his parents and Mary Grace, Sam was predeceased by his siblings: Dorothy Corson, Russell Chopiak, Lydia Slaven.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Karen Chopiak, Hannah Palmer, Dr. Bruce Bowling, and Lourdes’ Hospice for all of their tireless dedication to keeping dad comfortable these last few years.

Abiding Sam’s wishes, services for Sam will be held at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be directed to Lourdes’ Hospice through the Lourdes Hospital Foundation; 187 Riverside Dr., Binghamton, NY 13905.
