Ruth Ann Wheeland

Newark Valley, NY

Ruth Ann Wheeland, 69, of Newark Valley, passed away on December 29, 2024, following a brief illness. Born on June 25, 1955, the daughter of the late Edward and Lorraine (Axworthy) Mattscheck, Ruth’s life was a testimate to hard work and love for her family.

Ruth celebrated an incredible milestone just one day before her passing, marking her 50th wedding anniversary with her beloved husband, Franklin 'Frank' Wheeland. Their enduring love was the cornerstone of a family that grew to include her cherished children: Steven Mattscheck, Christina (Les) Furman, Tracey (Don Jr.) Swansbrough, Melissa Wheeland, Beverly (Roger Walburn) Wheeland, and Tamara (Mike Morse) Wheeland. Ruth's joy was multiplied with the birth of each of her grandchildren: Franklin, Nicholas, Russell, Roxanne, Brandon, Ashley, Tori, Marissa (Dylan), Max, Ryan, Micheal (Leah), Ruthanne (Chase), Abigail (Chris), Gracie, Michael, Alysha, and her beloved grand-dog May. She was also blessed to know the laughter and hugs of her great-grandchildren: Hayden, Gabriella, Jullianna, Ellyannah, Tate, Kaylon.

Additionally, Ruth is survived by her siblings Ed Mattscheck, Kevin (Jill) Durant, Ken Durant, Gary Mattscheck, Nancy (David) Trout, Grace (Mike) Rautine, and Teresa Steigler as well as her in-laws Debra (Tom) Judson, Judy (Paul) Alexander, Nate (Tina) Keener, Christopher Keener, and Leroy (Michelle) Wheeland, alongside numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins, they formed a vibrant tapestry that enriched Ruth's life with love and shared memories. Ruth will also be dearly missed by her feline companion George.

In addition to her parents Ruth was predeceased by her son-in-law Tim Chandler in July, and her brother-in-law, Chuck Wheeland.

Professionally, Ruth dedicated many years to the Ithaca City Schools as a custodian, a role she cherished. Her love for her job was evident in the care she took in her work and the special bond she formed with the children. Ruth's commitment to her work was a reflection of her overall approach to life—always working hard to provide for her family.

She was an avid fan of live auctions and the QVC Channel, where she found treasures and delights for her family and home. She was also an avid fan of the San Francisco 49ers, eager to watch every game. But above all, Ruth's heart belonged to her family and her "grandbabies." She worked tirelessly to provide the best for them, a testament to her loving and selfless nature.
