February 22, 1926 April 1, 2018 Bob was born at home on Whig St. in Newark Valley, NY a son of the late Willet and Mary (Albro) Cornwell. A lifelong resident, he graduated from Newark Valley High School, Class of 44 and was a Veteran of WW II, serving in the US Army. For several years he was an employee of the Tappan Gas Co. in Newark Valley. It was here he met the young lady who would become his wife and loving companion for 56 years, Margaret (Maggie) Schoonmaker. In 1964 he established Cornwell Gas and Appliance. His reputation and knowledge of appliances and repair of them spanned much of the surrounding areas and led to the addition of a hardware store in 1985 which he owned and operated until his retirement. During these years, Bob and Margaret met many friends in the appliance industry and enjoyed traveling worldwide with them to destinations such as Greece, Spain, Portugal and Ireland to name a few. They also enjoyed time with family and friends at their summer home on DeRuyter Reservoir and at their winter home in West Melbourne, FL where Bob was when he passed. He will be missed by the many friends he has made there in Arrowood Park over the past 38 years especially his bocce ball teammates. Locally, Bob was a lifetime member of the Newark Valley Fire Department, a member of VFW Post 1371, and American Legion Post #401 in Owego, NY where he was recently honored as the longest (70 years) continuous living member. Bob was predeceased by his wife of 56 years, Margaret and an infant daughter. He is survived by his sons and their spouses; Douglas (Carl Hardy) Cornwell of Greenacres, FL; Donald (Judy) Cornwell of Fairport, NY; and Dean (Phidelia) Cornwell of Newark, NY; his grandchildren, Sarah, Laura, Daniel Cornwell; Eric (Christina) Cornwell, Rachel (Bill) Eckler, Ryan (Emily Moore-Awad) Cornwell, Andrew (Joana) Cornwell, Emily (Justin) Guerrerri; 7 Great grandchildren, Harrison, Eveline, Maggie Joy, Tyler, Felicity, Theodore and Avett; many nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends including the gang from the ol manhattan days gatherings!Bob's family will receive friends at the MacPherson Funeral Home, 5 Whig St, Newark Valley, NY on Saturday, April 21st, from 12 noon until 2 pm at which time a Celebration of His Life and Memorial Service will begin. Inurnment will follow in Hope Cemetery, Newark Valley where Full Military Honors will be accorded. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the American Legion Post#401, 263 Front St. Owego NY 13827 in loving memory of Robert L Cornwell.
