Miller, 90, formerly of Owego, died peacefully Saturday afternoon, April 16 at the Kendal Retirement Community in Cayuga Heights, N.Y., from complications of lung cancer. Born May 20, 1931, the son of Frederick Miller and Mildred Miller (nee Miles), Bob is survived by his sisters, Marjorie Whitmer of Delray Beach, Fla., and Carol Garland of Mount Juliet, Tenn.; daughter, Carol Miller Wofsey of St. Louis, Mo. and her husband, Daniel; son, Gerald Miller of Valencia, Pa. and his wife, Joanne; son, Randall Miller of Columbia, Md. and his wife, Teresa; six grandchildren, Katherine Massa, Allison Symonds, Eric Wofsey, Megan Miller, Gerald Miller, and Ryan Miller; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Bob is preceded in death by his wife, Jeanne Brooks Miller, who died in 2007. A graduate of Salamanca High School in Salamanca, N.Y, and Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill. where he earned a bachelor of science in electrical engineering, Bob also held a masters degree in applied math from Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio. Bob also served in the U.S. Navy, attaining the rank of Lieutenant. Jeanne and Bob were married Jan. 10, 1953. Over the decades, he volunteered his time to several organizations, including the Boy Scouts of America, where he served for many years as a scoutmaster (Troop 70, Hullsville, N.Y.) and as a member and active participant in the Newark Valley First United Methodist Church. During his years at Kendal Bob was an active volunteer with the Red Cross, the Friends of the Tompkins County Public Library and the Lansing United Methodist Church, where he was a member at the time of his death. Bob and Jeanne and their family lived on Pine Tree Drive in the Town of Owego from 1964 through 2000. Following Bobs retirement from IBM Owego in 1986, they traveled extensively throughout the U.S. and internationally. They moved to Kendal at Ithaca in 2000, and enjoyed their life in the retirement community. The family will receive friends between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. on Thursday, April 21, at the MacPherson Funeral Home, 5 Whig Street, Newark Valley. A celebration of Bobs life will be held there immediately following, followed by interment at Hope Cemetery, Newark Valley. Rev. Allison Schmied of the Lansing United Methodist Church will officiate. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Bobs name to a charity of ones choice, or to the Kendal at Ithaca Residents Association, 2330 Triphammer Road, Ithaca, NY 14850.
