A host of angels, led by his beautiful granddaughter angel, Sydney Alexandra Cook, escorted Dick to his heavenly home on December 19, 2016, where he was joyfully welcomed into the arms of his parents, Nora (Connell) and Peter Niznik. Dick was born November 3, 1945, in Endicott, NY and was a lifetime resident of Tioga County. He was raised in Owego and graduated from Newark Valley High School where he excelled in many sports, including football, basketball, baseball and track. In his adult years, he truly enjoyed the game of golf. Forever a country boy, Dick loved the outdoors, spending many seasons hunting, fishing and gardening. He was also a proud Navy man, serving on the USS Forrestal. Dick enjoyed woodworking and created many wonderful pieces which he gifted to his family and friends. One of his true joys was volunteering at church, a place where countless meals were cooked alongside other church members whom he considered great friends. Dick dearly loved and took great pride in his family and felt beyond any doubt that he had received lifes greatest gift in them. Surviving Dick is his best friend, loving and devoted wife of 50 years, Rosemary (Grabowski) Niznik; his children, who upon seeing would light up his face with a great smile: Kim Niznik (Willard Cook), Kathleen Cook (Kenny Cook), Rick Niznik (Brian Grant) and Karen Currier (Steve Currier); his treasured grandchildren: Sierra Beebe, Austin Beebe, Thomas Cook and Ethan Currier; his siblings: Mary Kay Johnson (Ace), Peter Niznik and Theresa Haupt (Robert); many nieces, nephews and cousins.A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30 am, Friday, December 23, at St. John the Evangelist Church, Rock St. Newark Valley followed by military honors. The family will then receive friends in the church hall where a luncheon will be served. As a family, we would like to thank the entire Mercy House of the Southern Tier family for the love and support given to us over the past two weeks. Dick truly felt at home there. It only took him a few minutes to win over the hearts of the many earthly angels at Mercy House.
