Richard H. Hopkins, 91, of Berkshire, passed away on Wednesday, July 24, 2013 following a period of declining health. Dick is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Laura Hopkins, his children, R. Jeffrey Hopkins, Jon Hopkins, Jody (Robert) Tatich and Janis Nelson. Also surviving are his cherished grandchildren: Krista (Josh) Gilmartin, Camaron (Deanna Hyde) Hillman, Samuel Tatich, Steven Tatich, Matthew Hopkins, Michaela Nelson, great grandson Gavin Gilmartin, sister, Marian Stevens, several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents Walter and Ruth Hopkins, sister, Alberta and grandson Clayton Tatich.Dick was a US Army veteran of WW II, a survivor of Pearl Harbor, a Bronze Star recipient, and also served in Guadalcanal. He was a graduate of Michigan State College and retired from the US Dept. of Agriculture in Owego, where he worked as a soil conservationist. He was a member of the Episcopal Church and Glen A. Warner VFW Post 1371, Owego. For many years he enjoyed being a member and dancing with several round and square dance clubs in the area. His hobbies included hunting, fishing, traveling, maintaining his lawn, TV Westerns and his HO train set. His happiest moments were those spent with his family and friends.His family will receive friends at the MacPherson Funeral Home, Newark Valley on Wed., July 31 from 2-4 pm followed by a Memorial Service.
