Paul E. Purple, 81, life-long, well known and respected resident of Newark Valley, passed away on May 6, 2016. Paul is survived by his buddy, his pal, his best friend, and loving wife of 59 years, Margery Purple, and their children, Jody (Wayne) Hartley, Laurie (Tom) Kilb and Jay Purple; his cherished grandchildren, Stephanie Hartley, Jesse Hartley, Vincent Kilb and Alison Kilb; his father-in-law, Ray Wurtenberg; sisters-in-law, Mary Lou (Ed) Katchuk, Jane Wurtenberg, Barbara (Richard) Wright and several nieces and nephews. Paul was born on Sept. 11, 1934 in Newark Valley a son of the late Jay C. and Harriet (Harding) Purple. He was also predeceased by his sisters, Janet Russo and Alice (Jack) Allen. He was a graduate of Newark Valley High School, Class of 1952 and Broome Community College. Paul served in the US Army reserves and was President and CEO of Hardware Fare Do-It Center, Town of Chenango. A dedicated Life Member of the Newark Valley Fire Dept., he served in many different capacities including Assistant Chief and Chief. Paul also served as Village Trustee, Deputy Mayor and Mayor. His hobbies included Antique Trucks and Model Railroads. His presence will be greatly missed. Friends are invited to share stories and memories of Paul with his family on Friday, May 13 from 3-7 pm at the MacPherson Funeral Home in Newark Valley. A Memorial Service and Celebration of His Life will be held there on Saturday at 11 am followed by inurnment in Hope Cemetery.
