Milt E. Slater, a beloved family man, passed away unexpectedly at his home in Newark Valley, NY on August 20, 2023. He was born on May 9, 1957, the son of the late Milton and Esther (Woodward) Slater. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Stewart, brother-in-law Stephen McCall, nephew, Steven Thompkins and his special friend, Penny Douglas.
Milt is survived by his wife Sherry, his sons Jason Slater, Eric (Jennifer) Slater, and daughter Elisa (Charles) Monroe. He was a proud grandfather to Nicolas, Zachary, Andrew, Caleb, Hannah, Lily and Malachi and a loving brother to Marilyn McCall, Lynda (Dan) Crispell, Janice Ring and dear uncle to 7 nephews and 12 nieces. Many friends also survive among them his special friend Tarean.
Milt began his career at Endicott Johnson Shoe Company before transitioning to IBM in both Endicott and Glendale. His career path took him from the tech industry to the open road as he enjoyed traveling as a truck driver for Roehl. Eventually, Milt's entrepreneurial spirit led him to start his own business, Slater Construction in Newark Valley.
A lover of all creatures, Milt was especially known for taking in stray cats. They soon became his. Ali found Milt in 2014 as a kitten and has stayed by his side ever since. His love for animals extended to the natural world, where he often found peace and inspiration. From gardening to hunting, Milt was happiest when he was outdoors, appreciating the beauty of the world around him. His love for nature was also captured through his photography, a hobby that allowed him to share his perspective of the world with others.
Milt’s life was marked by hard work, love for his family, and a deep appreciation for nature. His legacy will live on in the hearts of those he touched. His life was a testament to the power of love, hard work, and the beauty of the natural world.
A time of sharing memories with Milt’s family and friends will be held at MacPherson Funeral Home, 5 Whig St., Newark Valley on Monday August 28, 2023 from 6 – 8:00 PM.
