Mary R. Shellhammer

February 1, 1931 — January 3, 2024

Mary R. Shellhammer, 92, a beacon of wisdom and passion, departed from this life on January 3, 2024. Born on February 1, 1931, in Belmont, NY, she was the daughter of the late Earl and Minnie (Edwards) Holt, Mary's life was a testament to the power of faith, education, and community service. Her warm presence and kind-hearted nature will be fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.


In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of 50 years Robert J. Shellhammer, her son Stephen, her grandson Alexandru, as well as 2 brothers and 3 sisters.


Mary is survived by her daughter-in-law Dianne Shellhammer, and granddaughter Tori.


Mary received a Bachelor of Science in Education from Oneonta State University and a master’s degree SUNY Cortland. She dedicated nearly three decades to nurturing young minds as an elementary school teacher at Homer-Brink Elementary School, Union-Endicott School District, and Maine Memorial. Her influence has touched the lives of countless children.


She was a longtime, devoted member of the First Baptist Church of Newark Valley, where she served as a leader of the AWANA youth group, guiding young people in their spiritual growth and development. Mary was an active member of the All-Church Ladies Fellowship (ACLF), as well as a member of the Senior Citizens of Newark Valley, where she forged lasting friendships and made cherished memories. Mary's love for writing letters and keeping meticulous lists for everything was her trademark and endearing trait that kept her connected to friends and family near and far.


Services for Mary will be held at the First Baptist Church of Newark Valley on Tuesday, January 9th 2023 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Rollin Howard officiating. Friends and family may call from 10:00 - 10:45, at the church. A private burial will be held at the convivence of the family at Hope Cemetery.
