Marvin V. McNeil, 93, passed away at his home in Newark Valley on July 25, 2012 following a few months of declining health. He joins his beloved wife Betty who predeceased him in 2007 and his sisters, Cleo Cavatio, Louise Lindhorst, his son-in-law, Ron Hull and grandson Steven Hull. Marv is survived by his children: Marvin Thomas McNeil and wife Sharon, Afton; Sarah (Sally) Hull, Sidney; Col (Ret.) Charles McNeil and wife Sharon, Laguna Niguel, CA, Peggy Pierce and husband Chester, Newark Valley. Also surviving are his sisters: Millie (Joseph) McNamara, Hilda Wilbur, brother, Richard (Florence) McNeil; sister-in-law, Evaline Multer, brothers-in-law: Paul Cavatio and James Glann. His 12 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews will surely miss their grandpa and uncle too. For the past 10 years, Marv has happily remained in his home because of the loving care provided by his dedicated friend, cook and caregiver, Rosalie (William) Wright. Thank you Rosalie.Born on Sept. 11, 1918 in Nichols, NY, Marv was the son of Harry and Ethel (Tasker) McNeil. He was a graduate of Owego Free Academy, served in the US Army during WW II, and served as manager of the former Grand Union in Newark Valley until he became an IBM employee.for more than 30 years. Following their retirement, Marv and Betty enjoyed wintering in Florida for 16 years. Marv was a devoted Member of the First United Methodist Church of Newark Valley and a 65 year member of Speedsville-Newark Valley Masonic Lodge #265. Having grown up on a farm, Marv had a love of the land. As an adult, he planted bountiful vegetable and fruit gardens and enjoyed freezing, canning and eating the fruits of his labor with Betty (and neighbors). His grandchildren cherished the stories he told about life on the farm, horse pulls and baseball games. He was a #1 fan of the Boston Red Sox! A Funeral Service and Celebration of Marvs Life will be held at 1 PM on Sunday, July 29th at the First United Methodist Church, Newark Valley with Rev. Nancy J. Adams, his pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery, Lounsberry, thus making the 5th generation of the McNeil Family to be buried here. His family will receive friends on Saturday from 5-7 pm at the MacPherson Funeral Home, Newark Valley. Masonic Services will be conducted at 6:45 pm.
