Margery H Purple

Margery H. Purple, 78, life-long and beloved resident of Newark Valley, passed away suddenly on October 31, 2016. Marge is survived by her children Jody (Wayne) Hartley, Laurie (Tom) Kilb and Jay Purple; her grandchildren, Stephanie Hartley, Jesse Hartley, Vincent Kilb and Alison Kilb. Also surviving are her father, Ray Wurtenberg, her sisters, Mary Lou (Ed) Katchuk, Jane Wurtenberg and sister-in-law, Barbara (Richard) Wright, several nieces and nephews.She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, pal and best friend of 59 years, Paul Purple (May 6, 2016), her parents, Raynard and Iva (Beebe) Hartwell, brother, Bernard Hartwell and sister, Donna (Jim) Benson. Marge graduated from Newark Valley High School in 1956 and shortly thereafter, she and Paul were married. She was a licensed beautician and owned and operated The Golden Comb for many, many years. She was very active in her community and will long be remembered for always placing others before herself. Her memberships included the Ladies Auxiliary of the Newark Valley Fire Dept. and ONYX Chapter 196, OES where she served as Matron several times and also as Associate Grand Marshal. She loved to cook and bake and was renowned for her potato salad, mac and cheese and lemon meringue pies. She loved her family and enjoyed the camaraderie of her many friends. Marges family will receive friends on Saturday from 4-7 pm at the MacPherson Funeral Home, Newark Valley. Eastern Star Services will be conducted on Sunday at 2 pm immediately followed by a Memorial Service and Celebration of Her Life. Inurnment will be in the family plot at Hope Cemetery.
