Lucile E. Virtue

Lucile A. Virtue, 99 years old, passed away peacefully on March 14, 2008 at Riverview Manor Nursing Home Owego where she has resided for the past 2 years. Lucile is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Leon (Lee) and Terry Virtue of Newark Valley, NY, Larry and Christine Virtue of Wallace, SC and Jeanne Virtue Papesh of Bethlehem, PA . Also surviving are her eight grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. Born on Feb. 5, 1909 in Hanover, IL., she was a daughter of Frank and Elizabeth (Steele) Edgerton. She was predeceased by her husband, Willis, her brothers, Earl and Newell and sisters, Eunice and Jessie. Lucile received her BS degree for Wheaton College, IL. in 1932 and was awarded a National Honor in the Sigma Pi Fraternity. She later received her Masters in Elementary Education from Cortland State University. She was a 5th grade teacher in the Johnson City School District for many years. Lucile was also a long time and devoted member of Calvary Baptist Tabernacle in Vestal where she was especially dedicated to foreign missions and had sewn many baby quilts to be used by the missions.A memorial service will be held at the Calvary Baptist Tabernacle, 729 Main St, Vestal, 13850 at a later date to be announced. Contributions as expressions of sympathy may be directed to her church to be used for postage in mailing the baby quilts to the missions.The Cooley Family of MacPherson Funeral Home, Newark Valley is assisting with arrangements.
