Lela Saddlemire Smith Westfall

November 28, 1917 — February 10, 2012

Lela Saddlemire Smith Westfall, 94, passed peacefully in her sleep on Feb. 10, 2012 at the Groton Community Health Care Center where she has resided for the past several years. She was a former resident of Owego and Newark Valley. Lela is survived by her daughter, Darlene Leyburn and her husband Gary of MO, her son, Douglas Smith and his wife Sheryl of UT. Also surviving are her sister Clara Whitmarsh, her special niece Louise Terpenning, 15 grandchildren, several great grandchildren , great- great- grandchildren, many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by parents, Sylvester and Martha (Lizzie Sullivan) Saddlemire, her son Lynn Smith and 14 siblings. Lela was born on Nov. 28, 1917, in Newark Valley. She was a diligent worker throughout her life and a long time employee of Morse Chain, Ithaca. She enjoyed being outdoors and one of her favorite summer pastimes was mowing her lawn. Her family will receive friends on Wed. Feb. 15 from 10-11 am at the MacPherson Funeral Home, Newark Valley. A service will be held there at 11 am with her grandson, Bishop Michael Leyburn of the Church of Jesus Christ Latter- Day Saints, Cortland Ward, officiating.
