Lawrence F. Spangenburg, 91, of Owego and formerly of Newark Valley, passed peacefully Sunday morning, April 19, 2009. Larry is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 37 years, June (Allen Walker) Spangenburg, his sons, Gerald (Harriet) Spangenburg, Noel (Linda) Spangenburg, Joel (Terri) Spangenburg, Shale Spangenburg, daughter Joy (John) Robinsky, his extended family, John Walker, Robert (Donna) Walker, Jack (Susie) Walker, William (Dawn) Walker, many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Frederick and Eva (Chapell) Spangenburg, his sister Virginia Vonderhaar and his stepson, Chuck Walker.He was born on August 19, 1917 in Endicott, NY. Corporal Spangenburg proudly served as a machine gunner in the US Marine Corps during World War II in the Asiatic Pacific area. He was a retired employee of IBM Endicott and was a member of the Quarter Century Club. He was also a Lifetime member of Glen A. Warner VFW Post 1371, Owego, was a Past Commander and a longtime member of the Ritual Team. Larry was also devoted to his family and community. For many years, he taught hunter safety, was a Boy Scout Leader, and served with the Newark Valley Fire Dept. and Emergency Squad. An avid hunter and fisherman, he helped to establish the former Newark Valley Sportsman Club and enjoyed camping, boating and wood working. A funeral service and celebration of Larrys life will be held Friday at 11 am at the MacPherson Funeral Home, Newark Valley. Rev. Nancy Adams, Pastor of the First United Methodist Church, Newark Valley will officiate. Burial with full military honors accorded will follow in Hope Cemetery, Newark Valley. His family will receive their friends on Thursday from 4-7 PM at the MacPherson Funeral Home. Those wishing may kindly consider directing memorials in Larrys name to the charity of choice.
