Laura R. Gunther

Laura R. Gunther, 104, formerly of Newark Valley, passed away at the home of her daughter Judy in Florida on Feb. 1st, 2015 following a short period of declining health. Laura would have been blessed with 105 wonderful years had she lived until her birthday on March 18th. She was predeceased by her parents Thomas and Esther Evans, her husband, Joseph Gunther, infant daughter Barbara Jean and daughter Shirley M. Abrams. She is survived by her children: Eleanore Leisey, Joseph and Karen Gunther, Nancy (Darl) Benjamin, Carolyn (Ron) Harris, Thomas and Lucy Gunther, Donald Doc (Betty) Gunther, Judith (Ed) Woodward, Many grandchildren, great and great-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews also survive. Laura was a beloved wife, mother, and homemaker. After raising a family, she cared for the residents at the Glen Mary Nursing Home in Owego. Her memories covered many historical events, one of the most notable being the sinking of the Titanic in 1912. Laura had many favorites. Those that knew her well, knew that Tasty-Kakes and the San Francisco GIANTS were at the top of the list!Laura was baptized as one of Jehovahs Witnesses on June 14, 1942 and has been a faithful member of the Owego Congregation of Jehovahs Witnesses since 1947. Her meetings and her ministry were of the utmost importance to her, giving her strength during trials. For 20 years she volunteered as a full-time minister. Her love for her Creator, Jehovah, gave her the unshakable faith in the Resurrection hope; the hope of reuniting with her family in a Paradise on earth. John 5:28. A Memorial Service for Laura will be conducted at the Owego Congregation of Jehovahs Witness, Route 96, on Feb. 28th at 2:30 pm.
