Julia Harman, 89, passed peacefully on March 4, 2009. Julia was the beloved mother of Howard (Lynn) Harman, Julia Whittemore, Jessie (Anthony) Messina and Jerry (Carol Gould) Harman, Sr. She is also survived by her dear sister, Anna (Donald) Bolson; her 20 cherished grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, 10 great-great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Tammy Harman; and many nieces and nephews. Born on May 15, 1919 in Binghamton, Julia was a daughter of the late Frank and Anna (Mydlek) Karpensky. She was predeceased by her husband, Carl in 1985; and also by her two brothers, Chester and Brownie Karpensky. In her earlier years, she and Carl owned and operated a dairy farm in Maine. In addition to her many chores on the farm, Julia planted a large vegetable garden and then lovingly canned enough to feed the whole neighborhood. Many will remember her famous glazed doughnuts (200 at a time), dill pickles, wild fruit jellies, jams and wines and nut breads as well as her crocheted blankets, dolls and many other hand-crafted keepsakes. Julia was a very kind and loving woman who opened her home to many. A funeral service and celebration of her life will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, March 10th, at the MacPherson Funeral Home, 5 Whig St., Newark Valley. Pastor Russ Ward will officiate. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Berkshire. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 7-9 p.m. at the MacPherson Funeral Home.
