John E. Green, Jr.

April 13, 1937 — August 15, 2009

John Edward Green Jr. died Saturday, August 15th, 2009 at Lourdes Hospital in Binghamton, NY.The end of John's life was hastened by his love of smoking, bacon, salted peanuts, margaritas and his total disregard for following doctor's orders, or maybe because he enjoyed life a little too much for just over seven decades. He passed while surrounded by his loving wife Bea, his two children Kelee and Darby, his son-in-law Scott and Jamie, the best brother a man could know.He was born April 13th 1937 in Endicott, N.Y.the first child of John Edward and Martha Pipher Greene. There was little John was more proud of than his U.S. Military service. He entered the Marine Corps after high school and proudly served on the U.S.S. New Jersey. He rose to the rank of corporal and was, by his own admission, an average solider. But that didn't temper his love of the military which had him criss crossing the country attending Marine Corp reunions to the great consternation of my mother who was dragged behind.During his life he loved to talk history, argue politics, laugh at jokes and spend time helping raise his two precious grandchildren Casey and Rylee. John was known for his ability to hold a conversation. If you were unfortunate enough to be caught in his storytelling web you left with your head spinning with an endless amount of knowledge, hence the nickname, the chronicle man (how could anyone know that much about John Wayne and WWII).John's generosity knew no bounds. He was always the first to pick up a check, always there to lend his time or money to those in need. With his infectious, goofy smile and strong arm hugs he was the go to guy if you needed a simple attaboy or insightfully sage advice. His few faults included his massively hard head, unwavering support of Rush Limbaugh and his unnatural obsession with C-Span.John is also survived by his nephew Mathew Greene, brother in-law Jerry Brown, and sister in-law Barbara Orsbourn and husband Ernie. Although they may not have known it, brother Don Green of Endicott and John's two sons John Edward III and Tommy were consistently on his mind and always in his heart. The Green family would like to send our sincerest thanks to Dick and Nancy Alston, Rose Greene, Melissa and Nick Gravelding and all of our other friends and family that helped us through this very difficult time.In lieu of mourning John's death we are choosing to celebrate his life. He will have a party at Kristofer's in Glendale on Thursday August 20th from 5 9 pm to raise a glass and toast his lasting memory. A graveside service with full military honors, will be held at 1 PM on Thursday August 20th at Vestal Park Cemetery. Rev. Richard Alston will officiate.
