John A. Sherwood, 72,a life-long resident of Newark Valley, passed away suddenly on October 20, 2013. He was affectionately known as Buzz to some and Art to others. His presence will be greatly missed by his devoted daughters, Tracey J. and her husband Tracey G. Neigh, Melissa Callear and her husband Chuck Kohler, his loving sister Sharon and her husband Manfred (Buster) Cornell, his cherished grandchildren, Gavin Neigh, Charles and Christopher Kohler, nephew Robert (Tammy) Isham and several cousins and his former wife, Linda Warfle. He was predeceased by his parents Collins E. and Dora B. (Race) Sherwood, his daughter Tammy Sherwood and wife Kathleen. A life-long resident of Newark Valley, he was a graduate of Newark Valley High School Class of 59. He served in the US Army during the Vietnam era and retired from the NYS DOT where he had served as equipment foreman in Tioga and Tompkins County. Following retirement he was employed for 5 years at the Vestal Wal-Mart. Buzz was an avid hunter, raised a beautiful garden for many years, enjoyed bingo, bowling, sports, trips to the casino, traveling and was a member of the Owego Moose Club. He was a very proud grandpa and delighted in the achievements and accomplishments of each of the boys.A Funeral Service and Celebration of his life will be held at 11 am on Thursday at the MacPherson Funeral Home, Newark Valley. Burial will follow in Hope Cemetery where Full Military Honors will be accorded. His family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday from 4-8 pm.
