December 31, 1935 — June 3, 2014

Joanne R. Card, 78, left her earthly home and was united with her Lord on June 3, 2014. Joanne is the beloved mother of Robert (Patricia) Card and Douglas (Heather) Card and loving grandmother to Brian (Abby), Andy (Chelsey), Heather, Greg (Teddi), Adam (Kaitlynn), Kenny (Samantha)Card and Brittany Wahl. She is also survived by her sister, Cora Jean Corky Whitmarsh; several great grandchildren; sisters-in-law: Barbara Rabenstein, Mary Shellhammer; former daughter-in-law, Kathy Dickenson; brother-in-law, John Speaks, several foster children, among them: Gloria Colons, Ramona Norris, Kevin Cross and many special friends including her life- long friend, Sallie (McElwain) Lemponen. In addition to her parents, Joseph and Margaret Shellhammer, Joanne was predeceased by her husband, Kenneth Card, her siblings: Linda Speaks, Robert and William Shellhammer and grandson Carlton Wahl.Joanne was a graduate of Newark Valley High School, Class of 54 and a life-long, devoted member of the First Baptist Church, Newark Valley. She was a dedicated organist and pianist at church for 54 years and served in many capacities including: Sunday School teacher, Junior Choir director, Awana and Shipmates leader, and in her younger years on the Church softball team. Over the years, she has given piano lessons to many children in her home; enjoyed knitting and crocheting, gardening and Senior Citizens trips. She was a very gracious and kind woman who enjoyed baking for her family her pies and baked beans being most memorable.Joannes family will receive friends at the First Baptist Church, 40 Whig St., Newark Valley, Thursday, June 5th from 4-7 pm. A Funeral Service and Celebration of Her Life will be held there on Friday at 10 am with Pastor Michael Spiegel officiating. Burial will follow at Vestal Hills Memorial Park.
