Joan Ushak Orth

Joan (Ushak) Orth, 92, of Owego, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 23, 2012 at Willow Point Nursing Home in Vestal, NY. Joan was born on May 23, 1920 in New York, NY to Dmytro and Anna (Pusz) Uszak. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her siblings Walter, Andrew, Melanie and Sophie and her devoted and loving husband of 56 years, Herbert Orth (1997). Joan is survived by her two sons, Douglas (Karen) of Scarsdale, NY and Richard (Ruthanne) of Owego, NY and her four grandchildren, Christopher, Daniel (Korilynn), Carolyn and Mary; a sister-in-law, Helen Uszak and several nieces and nephews.Joan and Herb were united in marriage on May 31,1941, in NYC. They established their home in The Bronx and shared a lifelong relationship as best friends who were deeply committed to each other and their children. Joan was a dedicated mother. Together, they raised their sons in a home filled with love, honor and caring. Following Herbs retirement (he managed the photo lab at Time, Inc.,NYC), they retired to Cranbury, NJ and continued to enjoy many years together with their friends. They cherished the many visits from their children and grandchildren, whom they loved dearly. Joan also enjoyed reading, sewing, gardening and volunteering at her Church and in her community.For the past six years, she has resided at Castle Gardens Keepsake Village in Vestal.Her family sincerely thanks the staff at Castle Gardens and Willow Point for their dedication, professionalism and compassionate care.Friends are invited to call at the MacPherson Funeral Home, 5 Whig Street, Newark Valley, THIS SUNDAY EVENING FROM 5-7 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9 am Monday morning at St. John the Evangelist St, Newark Valley with Rev. William A. Moorby officiating. Burial will be at 1 pm on Tuesday at Holy Cross Burial Park, East Brunswick, NJ.
