Gerald “Jerry” Franklin Bowen, 93, a longtime and well-known former resident of Newark Valley, passed away peacefully on October 15, 2023, in Zephyrhills, Florida. Born on April 28, 1930, to the late Walter and Clarinda Bowen, Jerry lived a life filled with adventure and unmatched love for the outdoors.
Jerry was a proud U.S. Army Veteran, having served his country with honor and dignity. His time in the service instilled in him a deep sense of duty and discipline, qualities that he carried through his life.
Jerry was known for his friendly demeanor. He had a knack for making friends wherever he went, always ready with a warm smile and kind word. When he would return to Newark Valley, he always made sure to catch up and visit with all his friends and was always ready for a card game.
Jerry’s love for the outdoors was evident in his hobbies, he was an avid hunter and enjoyed spending time in nature’s embrace. While living in Florida, he had developed a love for fishing. Jerry was an avid fan of stock car and NASCAR racing and enjoyed being a flagger at the former Shangri-La Speedway in Owego. Jerry also took great pride in the operation of the family restaurant: Bowen’s Busy Bee, which was located on Main Street in Newark Valley.
Jerry is survived by his loving sister, Margie Keith, as well as his children: Carol Lasell, Patti (Michael) Hurst, James Bowen (Laurie Haskell), Michael Bowen, and Jeffrey (Marcelle) Bowen, all of Vestal. He also leaves behind cherished grandchildren: Amanda (Jack) Ross, Matthew (Krystle) Hurst, and Amber (Michael) Taylor, along with six great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Many nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, his wives, Treva Bowen and Barbara Bowen, and his brothers Richard, Robert, Ronald, Thomas, and Lawrence. He was also predeceased by his sisters Lois and Betty.
In remembering Jerry, we celebrate a life well-lived. Services for Jerry will be on Thursday, October 26, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. at the MacPherson Funeral Home in Newark Valley with Rev. Brandilynne Craver officiating. The family will receive friends from 11 to the time of service. Burial will be at the Hope Cemetery in Newark Valley, where military honors will be accorded.
