U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Jane Lee Wurtenberg passed away in her home in Texas on October 1, 2024, at the age of 66. She is survived by her brother-in-law, Edward G. Katchuk, and her eight nieces and nephews. She was born on September 30, 1958, a daughter to the late Raymond C. and Hilda E. Wurtenberg. She is predeceased by her brothers John R. Wurtenberg and David R. Wurtenberg, her sister, MaryLou Katchuk, her sister and brother-in-law, Marjorie and Paul Purple, and her wife, Iva Smith.


Jane was a graduate of Newark Valley High School and was an international exchange student in India her junior year. She subsequently joined the Army and served for 15 years. Her Army commendations include the Oak Leaf Cluster, Army Achievement Medal, multiple Good Conduct Medals, National Defense Service Medal, NCO Professional Development Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon II, and Sharpshooter Badge for rifle.


She graduated from Angelo State University with a BA in Business Administration, and she received her MBA in Business Administration from Western Governors University. Jane was given the President’s Volunteer Lifetime Service Award for donating more than 4,000 hours of her time volunteering with the American Red Cross.


Jane began playing the saxophone in middle school, passing on her love for music and her saxophone to her niece, Alexis Katchuk. She enjoyed puzzles, diamond art painting, and getting into heated discussions relating to her favorite NBA team, the NY Knicks. Her cats competed for her attention, even though she loved them both with her entire being.
