James Loyal Conaway

April 20, 1933 — June 8, 2023

James L. Conaway, 90, of Candor, NY, passed away on June 8, 2023. He was born on April 20, 1933, in Atlanta, GA, a son of Paula and Howard and Paula (Shipes) Conaway.


Growing up in Atlanta, he discovered his passion for music and became a talented violinist. As a young man, he played with the Atlanta Youth Symphony Orchestra.


Jim was a veteran of the United States Air Force serving during the Korean Conflict. Following his service, he embarked on a series of adventures that took him to South America. In Tarma, Peru, he opened a successful firework business, bringing a touch of magic and excitement to the lives of the local community. His adventurous spirit also led him to explore the jungles of Peru and travel to Ecuador. He treasured the memories of the time he spent hiking through the lush landscapes of South America. His sense of adventure and love for the outdoors continued throughout his life, as he later enjoyed walking the hills near his home in Candor, hunting, and studying geology.


Additionally, Jim was a highly skilled design engineer. He worked for Endicott Research Group and made significant contributions to the field during his career. He retired from the company after many years of dedicated service and was well-respected by his colleagues for his expertise and work ethic.


Jim is survived by his children, Jennifer Conaway and James Conaway, their mother, Lorraine Hidock and his brother-in-law Joseph James. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. James's memory will live on in the hearts of his loved ones, and his legacy of love, adventure, and curiosity will serve as a guiding light for generations to come.
