James "Jimmy" H Travis

March 9, 1971 — June 24, 2022

James H. Travis "Jimmy" March 9, 1971 June 24, 2022 On Friday, June 24th, 2022, Jimmy lost his long battle with addiction. This was a day that we feared and prayed would never come. Jimmy was born on March 9, 1971, in Endicott, NY to Mary Catherine (Niznik) and James V. Travis. He was Baptized at St. Johns Catholic Church in Newark Valley where he attended religion classes and received his Sacraments. Jimmy attended Newark Valley Central Schools and was a member of the Cross-Country team where he made many friends that became extended family to him. During his Junior year of High School, he and his friend, Nick, joined the US Army National Guard. He left for Basic Training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri that summer. Such a brave endeavor at such a young age! Jimmy was a member of the Class of 1989 and LOVED his friends, many of whom he still treasured. After High School, Jim continued with the National Guard, attended classes at Tompkins Cortland Community College (TC3) and did some cooking for local establishments until he began his 15-year career with the NYS Office for People with Disabilities (OPWDD) as a Secure Care Treatment Aide. Jimmy had a BIG heart; he was loving and generous. He was a huge Pittsburgh Steelers fan. He loved to cook- taking after his Grandpa Niznik and Uncle Dick. Jimmy had a very close bond with his Mom and we are certain that he is looking over her and will someday greet her in Heaven. Its impossible to capture who Jimmy really was in an obituary. He was fun and charismatic, but also lonely and sad. He was smart and resourceful and had potential to become a great success. As his lifetime friend, Kirsten, said, "he was good at his core" and he was! One thing is for certain, although his adult life was largely defined by his addictions, he was not just "another junky"- he was adored as a son, brother, nephew, cousin and friend. Love is clearly not enough to overcome the struggles and pain that lead to addiction, or the sadness that it leaves behind. Jimmys pain and sorrow is gone. He has now found peace. Please pray for his soul. Jimmy was predeceased by his beloved Grandparents, Pete and Nora (Connell) Niznik, Uncle Richard "Dick" Niznik and Stepfather Horace "Ace" Johnson. He is survived by his loving and devoted Mother, Mary "Kay" Johnson of Newark Valley, NY; his Father and Stepmother, James V. (Mary) Travis of New Bern, NC. He will be forever missed and loved by his Sister, Christine (Christopher) Maloney of Endicott, NY, Nephew, Scott Berghorn and Niece, Megan Maloney. Also, by his Uncle Peter Niznik of Owego, NY; Aunt Theresa (Robert) Haupt of Middletown, RI; Aunt Rosemary Niznik and cousins Kimberly Niznik (Willard), Kathleen (Ken) Cook, Rick Niznik (Brian), and Karen (Steve) Currier, and Gregory Haupt. A gathering for friends and family will be held at the West Endicott Park on Tuesday, July 19th from 6-8PM. We hope that you will join us in sharing happy memories of Jimmy. Memories and condolences may also be shared in guest book at www.macphersonfh.com Dear Jimmy, show all the angels and saints your brightest light and love. Youve got this!
