Igor Grechka, 75, of Owego, passed away on September 11, 2024. Born on December 20, 1948, in Kopychyntsi, Ukraine, Igor's life was a testament to the enduring spirit of hope, perseverance and the power of faith in his LORD and Savior.
He will be greatly missed by his beloved wife of 50 years, Lidiya Grechka, his children Orest (Maddalena) Grechka, Olga Grechka, Olena Grechka, Nicholai (Mandy) Grechka, Bogdan (Mayang) Grechka, Marian Grechka and Daniel Grechka, his beloved grandchildren Luca, Alexander, Julian, Sofia, and Musa, as well as a close family friend, Mary Buckingham.
Igor was predeceased by his parents Vasily and Ivanna Grechka.
Igor's journey to the United States began in June 1989 when he immigrated with his young family and the generous support from Lakeview Chapel of Owego and its members led by the late Pastor Fred and his wife Donna Hoover. Embracing his new home, Igor became a proud citizen in 1994, cherishing the opportunities and freedoms it provided. His love for his children and family was the cornerstone of his life, and he dedicated himself to nurturing and guiding them with his unwavering faith in God.
Educated with a Bachelor's Degree in Fine Arts, Igor possessed a deep appreciation for beauty and expression. He channeled his passion for the arts into his everyday life and found joy in the simple pleasures of history and writing poetry.
For 28 years, Igor served as a dedicated custodian at Owego Free Academy. Igor's love for history was matched only by his devotion to his faith. He lived a life guided by the principles of his belief, and his actions reflected the love and compassion at the heart of his religious practice. His faith was a source of strength and comfort throughout his life.
Those who knew Igor will remember him as a loving father and friend. His presence was a blessing, and his memory will continue to be a guiding light for all who had the privilege of knowing him.
