Howard Carl Harman III, 85, of Newark Valley, passed away peacefully on October 8, 2025, at his home, surrounded by his family. Born on November 11, 1939, in Endicott, New York, Howard was the son of the late Howard and Julia (Karpensky) Carter Jr.
Howard is survived by his wife Lynn (Benware) Harman, his children Howard C. (Linda) Harman IV., Teresa (Richard) Mansfield, Michael Harman, Tamara Harman, and Penny (Dewell) Burton, his step-daughters Christina Davis and Heather Lyon, his beloved grandchildren Izan Blocker, Joshua (Emerald) Mansfield, Caleb (Kayla) Mansfield, Dewell (Lindsey) Burton, and Aaron Burton, his great-grandchildren Maryn, Judah, Ellis, Duke, Byron (Dakota), Kota, Jace, and a great-great child Lyra.
He will be dearly missed by his siblings Jerry (Tammy) Harman and Julia Whitimore, his brother-in-law Anthony Messina, and his nieces and nephews Jerry (Katie) Harman Jr., Aubrey Harman, and Tracey (Marty) Luffman, along with many extended family members.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his stepson John Davis IV, and his sister Jessie Messina. Howard was a familiar face while visiting with his friends at many local diners, especially the Richford Diner and Friend’s Diner in Maine. Many will remember Howard for his wit and for being a jokester, often showing is expression of friendship through picking on those he loved.
He was self-employed for many years as an independent owner/ operator of a trucking company and as a mason with H&H Concrete, which to him was more than a job, it was a craft he was proud of. Howard also served on the Board for the Town of Maine, New York. Outside of work, his hands were rarely still, and he could often be found fishing, cutting wood, or tinkering with an old tractor.
Abiding Howard’s wishes, there will be no services, a celebration of his life will take place in June at the Pond. Memories and condolences can be shared in his online guestbook at www.macphersonfh.com. The family is under the caring guidance of MacPherson Funeral Home in Newark Valley.
