Horace 'Ace' Maw Johnson, Jr.

January 11, 1927 — April 2, 2019

Horace Ace M. Johnson, Jr, 92, passed away on April 2, 2019 following a period of declining health. He was born in Closter, NJ on Jan 11, 1927 a son of the late Salome (Green) and Horace M. Johnson, Sr. and was also predeceased by his sister Sally. He is survived by his wife of almost 40 years, Mary Catherine Kay (Niznik) Travis Johnson and his step-children Christine (Christopher) Maloney and James Travis of Endicott, son, Gregory (Terry) Johnson, grandchildren: Scott Berghorn, Megan Maloney, Katelyn Sullivan and Travis Johnson; sister, Bernice Herring, of Wellsville. Ace Served in the US Navy (Seebees) during WW II and was a member of Glenn A. Warner VFW Post 1371, Owego. He retired from NYSEG following 36 years of service. On July 7, 1979 he and Kay were united in marriage and made their home in Newark Valley. Here he found joy working on his property as he built gorgeous stone walls with hand-picked stone from area creeks and streams and planted beautiful flower gardens... deeming himself 'land caretaker for the Lord'. He took great pride in his work. His other enjoyments included singing in the choir of Owego United Methodist Church, playing softball, PBR, Lucky Strikes, mowing lawn and collecting antiques. Ace and Kay also enjoyed yearly trips to Alexandria Bay each summer. A Funeral Service will be held at 1 o'clock on Friday at the MacPherson Funeral Home, Newark Valley. Rev. Timothy M Middleton, Sr., Pastor of the First United Methodist Church of Newark Valley will officiate. Military Honors will be accorded and burial will follow in Hope Cemetery, Newark Valley.
