Helena P. Romanowski, 97, of Newark Valley, NY passed away on March 10, 2021. She was predeceased her parents John and Mary Pastalan of Newark Valley; her husband Edward Casmir Romanowski; her son Edward John Romanowski; her son-in-law Barry Richard Schimer; her brother Theodore (Cassie) Pastalan, her brother Leon Pastalan of Dexter, Michigan; her husbands parents, Stanley and Frances Romanowski; her husbands brothers Chester, Walter (Josephine) Stanley, Henry (Bernice), Milt (Rita) and Casmir Romanowski; her husbands sisters Sophie, Edna and Florence Romanowski, and Jane Massar. She is survived by her daughter, Maria Romanowski Schimer, of Peninsula, Ohio; grandchildren Lewis Edward and Elaina Francesca Schimer of Peninsula, Ohio, Crystal Leigh Romanowski of West Corners, NY; great-grandchildren Michael John and Alexis Grace Romanowski of West Corners, NY; daughter-in-law Karen Butterworth Romanowski, West Corners, NY; sisters-in-law Judy Romanowski, Endicott, NY, Alice Pastalan, Dexter, Michigan, Helen (Robert) Yudin, Stuart, Fl; brother-in-law James Massar, Johnson City, NY; many loving nieces and nephews. Helena was born the oldest of three children, and had many fond memories growing up on the family farm in Newark Valley. She graduated from Newark Valley High School with honors. During World War II, Helena was a member of the Civil Air Patrol. After the War, she met and married Edward Casmir Romanowski, and together they shared 47 years before his passing in June of 1993. She graduated from nursing school in Binghamton, N.Y., and worked as a nurse at Ideal Hospital in Endicott, NY and Vestal Nursing Home and her patients were always her first concern. Helena was a former member of Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish in Endicott, NY and a member of St. Mary Parish, Hudson, Ohio. Helena inherited her green thumb from her mother and could save plants in even the most dire condition. She loved tending to her flowers, and would generously share the bounty of her many gardens with friends and family alike. Her greatest joys in life were her children and grandchildren. Helena was independent and hardworking, generous and kind. Her spunk and quick wit will be greatly missed by all of her family and friends. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. John the Evangelist Church, on Saturday March 20 at 10:00 AM. The service will also be live streamed at https://my.gather.app/remember/helena-romanowski. MacPherson Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
