Gertrude Trudy Tompkins, 89, passed away on April 14, 2011 following a period of declining health. Trudy is survived by her nieces: Sharon (Clark) Denton, Cheryl (Randy) McCullough, sister-in-law; Louise Tompkins, several great nieces and nephews, cousins and many dear friends among them her special caregivers Rosalie and Bill Wright. Trudy was born on August 14, 1921 in Newark Valley a daughter of Truman and Gertrude Tompkins. She was Valedictorian , Newark Valley High School class of 1939 and a graduate of the Ridley Secretarial School. For 37 years, she was a dedicated employee of National Life of Vermont in Binghamton. Following her retirement, Trudy was able to build her dream log home. She has enjoyed living there with her animals and maintaining her flower gardens. She was a long time and faithful member of St. Johns Episcopal Church in Speedsville, serving as chairman of the ECW for 20 years and was an honorary life member of the Vestry. She was also a member of the Newark Valley, Berkshire, and Caroline Senior Citizens Clubs, and the Newark Valley Historical Society where she served as a guide at the Bement Billings Farmstead.Friends are invited to attend a graveside service at 1:30 PM on Monday, at Hope Cemetery, Newark Valley. The Rev. Richard Schaal, her pastor will officiate. Memorials in her memory may be directed to Stray Haven, 194 Shepherd Rd., Waverly, NY 14892. The Cooley Family of MacPherson Funeral Home, Newark Valley is assisting with arrangements.
