Wakeman, Sr., 73 of Berkshire, passed away at his home and in the presence of his adoring family on July 14, 2015 following a period of declining health. Born on May 7, 1942 in Endicott, George was the 5th child of the 10 children born to William and Edna Wakeman. He began working at various farms in the area while attending Newark Valley Schools. When his twin brothers were drafted into the Army in 1961, not to be left behind, he enlisted with them, thus fulfilling Tioga Countys draft quota. In 1965 he met the love of his life Beverly Holbrook. They married in 1966 and have shared 49 years of joys and sorrows but have been blessed with mostly joys, the greatest being the birth of their children and grandchildren. Throughout his life-time, George was respected for his hard work ethic and will be remembered for the laughter, love and joy he brought in everyones life. Camping, card playing, various collectables and his tractors brought family and friends togetherno reason was necessary.just fun. He will be greatly missed by many, especially his devoted wife, Beverly and his daughter Robin, his grandchildren: Amanda (Brian) Wilson, Amber (Nicholas) Creighton, Jerica Hoopengarner and her fianc Joseph Christine, and Joshua Hoopengarner; great grandchildren: Lucas and Leah Creighton, Logan Christopher Wilson; his siblings: William Wakeman, Robert(Susie)Wakeman, Roy(Ina)Wakeman, Marion Payne, Marjorie (Joseph) Faber and Kathleen Frain; many nieces, nephews, cousins, Bevs loving family and numerous dear friends. In addition to his parents, George was predeceased by his son George, Jr., siblings, Jerry, Arthur and Frank, sister-in-law Helen Wakeman and brother-in-law, Donald Payne.A Funeral Service and Celebration of His Life will be held at 10 am this Saturday at MacPherson Funeral Home, Newark Valley where full military honors will be accorded. Burial will follow in Hope Cemetery.Family and friends will gather at the MacPherson Funeral home Friday evening from 5-8 pm to share memories and stories.
