George F. Scannapieco

April 29, 1954 — September 4, 2014

George F. Scannapieco, Jr., 60, of Newark Valley, passed away on Sept. 4, 2014 as a result of injuries sustained in an accident. George will be so greatly missed by his loving wife Wendy and their sons, John and Paul Scannapieco; his devoted parents: George, Sr and Martha Scannapieco; his brother and sister-in-law, Eric and Kathleen Scannapieco; his aunts: Olga Merenda, Lucille Jorgensen; nephews Erik and Shane Scannapieco; Wendys mother, Emily Platchek and many other members of Wendys family. He was predeceased by his brother Mark Scannapieco in 2013.George graduated from Abington, PA High School and Penn State University with a Bachelors in Biology. His thirst for knowledge never ceased. He became proficient in tree and plant identification, planted magnificent gardens and also became skilled in building and contracting. The grounds of Cornell University were greatly enhanced as George applied his love of horticulture and expertise there as an employee. He earned the Eagle Scout Award and became actively involved in Troop 30 as his sons were developing into young men. His gregarious nature, along with his joy in pleasing others, his keen sense of humor, his ability to converse with everyone and truly enjoy life, all made him the fine man that everyone loved so dearly.Friends are invited to gather with his family at the MacPherson Funeral Home in Newark Valley for a time of visiting and sharing of stories and memories on Tuesday, Sept. 9th from 5-8 pm.A Funeral Service and Celebration of His Life will be held there at 1 oclock on Wednesday followed by burial in Evergreen Cemetery, Berkshire.
