George E. Arnold, 79, a lifelong resident of Berkshire, passed away at his home on Tuesday, February 16, 2010 following a brief illness. George is survived by his cousin Jane Moore, her children, Linda (Douglas) Bronson, Gary Bush, Vincent Moore and many friends including Howie Carter. George was born on January 6, 1931 in Whitney Point, NY, son of the late Robert F. and Hannah Lenora (Davern) Arnold. He was a graduate of Newark Valley High School, class of 1949 and a veteran of the Korean Conflict serving in the US Navy on the destroyer USS Smalley DD565. George was a lifelong, devoted member of St. John the Evangelist Church in Newark Valley where he served many years as an usher. He was also a member of Glen A. Warner VFW Post 1371, Owego. He retired from General Electric in Johnson City in 1989 following 40 years of service. George was a quiet and kindhearted man. He enjoyed early morning breakfasts with his late friend Dave Carter and then mid-morning breaks at Friends Diner in Maine. He also enjoyed his beloved cat, Blitzer, feeding the birds and the many stray animals who came 'knocking' at his door.Friends are invited to a period of visitation and sharing of memories at the MacPherson Funeral Home, Newark Valley on Friday from 5-7 pm and to a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 am on Saturday at St. John the Evangelist Church, Rock St., Newark Valley. Rev. William A. Moorby, his Pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Hope Cemetery, Newark Valley, where full military honors will be accorded by VFW Post 1371.Condolences and memories may also be shared at www.macphersonfuneralhome.comExpressions of sympathy may be directed to a charity of ones choice in loving memory of George E.
