Gary W. Edwards of Maine, NY
Gary W. Edwards, 76, a proud veteran, devoted family man, and beloved member of his community, passed away peacefully on September 21, 2023, in Cleveland, Ohio. Born on June 3, 1947 in Johnson City, NY, Gary was a son of the late William Wallace and Martha Edwards. He was a graduate of Vestal High School's Class of 1966. He was a patriot at heart, enlisting and serving his country with distinction in the US Army in Vietnam from 1966 to 1968.
Gary was a man of many talents, but most notably, he was known for his skills as a mechanic. He retired from BC Transit, where he was a highly respected member of the team. Even in retirement, Gary's love for his work did not wane. He continued to drive for B & B Paving and previously for Gary Dyer Construction. His reputation as a handyman was well-known and appreciated by all who knew him.
An avid race car fan, Gary's love for speed and machinery was infectious. His passion extended to Garden Pulling Tractor events, where he won several trophies, showcasing his competitive spirit and mechanical skills. His love for his 856 Tractor was legendary, as was his joy in making hay. However, his interests weren't limited to machinery; he was also a dedicated member of the Maine American Legion.
Yet, despite his many accomplishments and interests, what best defined Gary was his love for his family. He was a loving and generous husband to his wife, Janet S. (Corson) Edwards, and a caring and supportive father to his children, Debbie (Glen) Davis, Vicki (Edward) Lucia, Jodi (Michael) Wombacker, and Tami Guy. He was also a cherished stepfather to Amanda Bridges, Jamie Scribner, and Jeremy (Mindy) Davey.
Gary was a doting grandfather to his special grandchildren, Trevor, Hali, Alexa, Abbi, Matthew, Amber, Amanda, Tim, Evan, Kian, Megan, Ross, Kohle, Parker, and Auriah, and step- great grandchildren Eleanora and Madeline. He is also survived by his siblings, Judith (Tom) Pass, Sylvia Sweppenheiser, Sara Jo Kukowski, and Rebecca (Doug) Decker, along with several nieces, nephews, and their families. Gary was predeceased by his parents, William Wallace & Martha Edwards, his brother Gerald, and brother-in-law, David Sweppenheiser.
In the words of Albert Einstein, "Only a life lived for others is a life worthwhile." Gary lived this philosophy, pouring love and generosity into his family, serving his country, and contributing to his community. His memory will be treasured and his presence sorely missed.
Gary was a man who lived his life to the fullest, touching the lives of many with his kindness, generosity, and handy skills. His legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of all who were fortunate to have known him.
As we celebrate Gary’s life and the lasting impact he had on those around him, let us remember the love, laughter, and joy he brought to our lives. We will gather for a period of visitation on Wednesday, September 27 from 10 – 12 pm at the MacPherson Funeral Home, 5 Whig St., Newark Valley. A funeral service will follow at 12 pm. Gary will be laid to rest in the Maine Cemetery. Memories and condolences may be shared by visiting his guestbook at www.macphersonfh.com
