Fred

March 20, 1942 — April 12, 2023

Fred G. Kiechle passed away April 12, 2023, at the age of 81. Fred was born March 20, 1942, in Utica, NY to Fred Ludwig Kiechle and Mildred Lobdell Kiechle. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Marcia Kiechle, two sons, Fred A. (Karen) Kiechle and Matt W. (Nadia) Kiechle, granddaughter Alexandria Park, brother-in-law Marvin (Theata) Miller, and sister-in-law Sharon Miller.

Fred graduated from Ithaca College with a degree in education, then taught for Ithaca City Schools for 34 years. Fred was known for his enthusiastic and innovative approach to education that inspired all types of learners. He founded an outdoor education program and served as the Director for several years. He started a functional radio station in the school and initiated a program in which Ithaca students corresponded with students from a small Alaskan town. Fred was a U.S. Coast Guard licensed Captain and during the summers he operated a charter fishing boat on Lake Ontario for 13 years.

Upon his retirement from Ithaca Schools, Fred became involved with the Newark Valley Historical Society where he served as Director. He initiated the building of the Sycamore Bridge and associated nature trails on Society property, as well as the pavilion and other physical improvements. Additionally, he played instrumental roles in developing and furthering the Black Powder and Black Smithing guilds.

Fred’s love for, and loyalty to, his family was immense and relentless. He seldom missed an athletic event in which his sons played, or his wife coached. All in his family knew they could always count on his formidable support of their endeavors.

Next to his family, Fred loved to hunt and fish. For more than 50 years he opened trout season on Salmon Creek with his friend Walt Dininny. He spent countless days hunting and fishing with his two sons and other close friends, making memories that will be forever cherished.

Calling hours will be held on Sunday, April 16 from 1:00 - 3:00 pm at the MacPherson Funeral Home on Whig Street in Newark Valley. The family will provide flowers. If you wish to send a memorial, please direct it to the Newark Valley Historical Society, Box 222, Newark Valley, NY 13811.
