Erwin P. Munch

February 9, 1931 — September 25, 2024

Erwin P. Munch, 93, of Newark Valley, and formerly of Springfield, Virginia, passed away on September 25, 2024, following a period of declining health. Erwin was born in Caroline Center, NY on February 9, 1931, the son of the late Peter and Grace (Barnum) Munch, and after high school, enlisted in the United States Army.

Erwin was a proud US Army veteran, having served his country with valor in both the Korean War and Vietnam. He embraced his military career with a sense of duty that never wavered, retiring in 1972 at the rank of Sergeant First Class. His commitment to his nation continued beyond active duty, as Erwin transitioned into a civilian role, working as a contractor for the US Navy in the field of Information Technology. His work ethic and expertise were a testament to his character, marking him as a man who was always ready to serve his country in any capacity.

He was a devoted husband to his late wife, Joan Munch, who predeceased him in 2011. Their partnership was one of mutual respect and deep affection, a bond that remained unbroken even after Joan's passing. Although Erwin and Joan had no children, he leaves behind a sister-in-law Geraldine (Robert) Pierce, many special nieces, nephews, and extended family who will carry his memory with them.

In his personal life, Erwin was a man of simple pleasure. He had a passion for building computers and tinkering with technology, a pursuit that kept his mind sharp and his curiosity piqued. His hands were rarely still, as he found joy in the act of creation and the satisfaction of solving complex problems. Despite his impressive skills, Erwin lived a quiet life, preferring the solace of his workshop to the bustle of social gatherings.

Erwin will be laid to rest at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery, next to his wife. Memories and condolences can be shared in his guestbook online at www.macphersonfh.com. The family is under the caring assistance of the MacPherson Funeral Home in Newark Valley.

The family would like to thank the Palliative care team at Binghamton General for their care.
