Dorothy M. Gurney, 81, went home to be with her Lord and Savior early Monday morning, January 19, 2009. Dorothy is survived by her devoted sons, Dale (Lynn) Gurney and Dean Gurney; her sisters, Katherine Raymondi and Shirley (Claude) Fuller; her cherished grandchildren, Denise (Kevin) Reilly, Jeremy (Nicole Malinowski) Clark, Christina Guerney, Scott (Gabby Bidwell) Gurney; three great-grandchildren, Michelle, Peter and Kyle; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Dorothy was born on November 14, 1927 in Johnson City, a daughter of the late Frank and Agnes (Beeley) Strait. She was predeceased by her loving husband of 59 years, Wilfred Gurney; her daughter-in-law, Sharon Gurney; and her brother, Donald Strait. Dorothy was a faithful Christian woman and attended the Baptist Church. She was also a member of the Newark Valley and Jennie F. Snapp Senior Citizens Clubs and enjoyed the many outings and musicals she attended with them. She was a devoted and loving wife, mother and grandmother with a special gift of making each individual feel very special. A committed homemaker, Dorothy loved to garden and preserve but she was happiest when she was baking. There was never a coconut cream pie that could measure up to Dorothy's! A funeral service and celebration of her life will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday at the MacPherson Funeral Home, 5 Whig St., Newark Valley. Rev. Marlene Steenburg will officiate. Interment will be at a later date in Nanticoke Valley Cemetery. The family will receive their friends on Wednesday from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. at the MacPherson Funeral Home. Kindly consider extending a kindness to another or contributing to a charity of choice in Dorothy's memory.
