Dorla J. Akers, 73, passed peacefully, on Friday, May 7, 2010, surrounded by her family. Dorla is survived by her husband of 54 years, George R. Akers, Jr, and her children James (Lori) Akers, Judy (Kevin) White and Jeanine (Gary) Christensen, as well as 8 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. Dorla was born on September 1, 1936, in Endicott, daughter of the late Ronald and Mildred Saddlemire. She was a graduate of UE High School Class of 1954. A life-long lover of classical music, she was a member of the Binghamton Symphony Orchestra and an accomplished bassoonist. Dorla and George were residents of Newark Valley for many years and Dorla was a long time employee of the Newark Valley School District. They also resided in Germany for 3 years and Salt Lake City for more than 20 years prior to returning to the area and establishing their home in Owego. A Memorial Service and celebration of Dorla's life will be held at a future date to be announced. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in memory of Dorla J. Akers to Lourdes Hospice whose support continues to be invaluable to the family (4102 Old Vestal Rd., Vestal, NY 13850) MacPherson Funeral Home, Newark Valley is assisting the family and memories and condolences may be shared with the family by visiting our website, macphersonfuneralhome.com.
