Doris K. Baylor, 101, formerly of Newark Valley, passed away peacefully on May 15, 2025, with family by her side. Born on January 6, 1924, the daughter of the late Christopher and Charlotte (Franz) Rooney, Doris's journey through life was marked by her unwavering faith, her passion for education, and her dedication to her family.
She is survived by her loving children, David (Linda) Baylor, Daniel (Lindy) Baylor, Kathleen Baylor, and John (Tina) Baylor, her very special grandchildren, Scott (Shauntay) Baylor, Shawn (Carrie) Baylor, Christopher Baylor, Amber Baylor, Levi Baylor, Logan Baylor, Aaron Baylor and Joey (Krystal) Pish, great grandchildren, Shaelyn, Scottie, Shane, Brennan, Chelsea (Kevin), Zach, Ellie, Douglas, Kameren, Adalynn and Zoey, and one great great grandson Seth, her sister-in-law Nancy Baylor, and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Doris was predeceased by her husband of 58 years, James “Jim” Baylor in 2006.
For many years, Doris enlightened the minds of young individuals as an English teacher at Newark Valley Central Schools. Her love for literature and language was infectious, and she inspired countless students to explore the vast world of words. Upon her retirement from teaching, Doris did not leave her love for books behind; she continued to share her passion for reading as a librarian at the Tappan-Spaulding Memorial Library.
Doris's life was deeply rooted in her faith, and she was a devoted member of St. John's Church in Newark Valley. As part of the Rosary Society, she found solace and joy in prayer and fellowship. Her spirit of giving extended beyond the church walls as she generously volunteered her time with Project Neighbor, an organization committed to helping those in need within the local community.
She loved to bring her family together for celebrations, with every holiday and birthday an opportunity for her to express her love for cooking and baking. Her Christmas cookies, molasses oatmeal bread, and spaghetti and meatballs were favorites among her loved ones, and the memories of these gatherings will be cherished forever.
Doris loved gardening and her home was always adorned with the beauty of her flowers. Her garden was not just a hobby but a testament to her nurturing nature; each bloom that sprouted from the earth was a reflection of her loving care.
Our family would like to thank the staff at Cayuga Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for their compassionate care of Mom for the last four months, and a very special thank you to the exceptional team at Longview Assisted Living for the personal care, activities, music and parties that kept Mom busy during her nearly nine years there.
