Donald E. Furgeson

Donald E. Furgeson, 74, went home to be with his Lord and Savior onEasterSaturday evening, April 19, 2014. Don passed at home with his cherished family at his side. Born in New Bedford MA, he was the son of the late Earl H. and Edith (Boothby) Furgeson. He is survived by his wife of nearly 54 years, Elizabeth Betty (Limbrunner) Furgeson, his children and their spouses: Deborah and Bradley Van Brunt of Newark Valley; Mark and Laura Furgeson of Charlotte, NC; Kristen and Scott Kelly of Scarborough, ME; and Steven and Lisa Furgeson, of Topsham, ME. Also surviving are his beloved grandchildren: Chad (Melina) Van Brunt; Christian (Victoria) Van Brunt; Richard and Michael Furgeson; Katelyn and Anna Kelly, Joshua and William Furgeson; his great grandson, Levi Van Brunt; and sister, Jane (George) Limbrunner and 2 nephews. Don was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. Over the years, through his love and example, he has blessed his family. He poured his attention and energies into each of his grandchildren, leaving a beautiful legacy. Don served his country in the US Air Force and completed his teaching education at SUNY Albany and Cortland. For 29 years, he taught Physics and Chemistry at Newark Valley High School. Many students will remember his unique, effective style of instruction. Don was a skilled carpenter, mechanic, woodworker, leader, and friend, enjoying a wide variety of hobbies as well as spending time at the family cottage in the beautiful State of Maine. Don strived throughout his life to be an example of Christ through leadership and education. A long-time member of Lakeview Chapel in Owego, he served the church in many leadership roles, including the Board of Elders and as Director of Christian Education. His family will receive friends at the MacPherson Funeral Home, 5 Whig St Newark Valley on Wednesday from 6-8 pm. A Funeral Service and celebration of Dons life will be held at 11 am Thursday, at the Lakeview Chapel, 185 Day Hollow Rd, Owego. Pastor Todd Wolfe will officiate.
