Domenico D'Angelo

Domenico DAngelo passed away February 10, 2015, in Williamsville, New York. He was born Feb. 17, 1925, in Canonsburg, Pa., the son of the late Anthony and Nancy (Silvestri) DAngelo. The family moved back to Italy in the late 1920s, and Dom returned to America in 1950. Dom earned bachelors and masters degrees from the University of Bridgeport and Syracuse University, respectively. He was also a graduate of the Istituto Magistrale (Teachers College) in Pescara, Italy. He taught French and Latin at Newark Valley (N.Y.) High School, retiring in 1984. He was elected Tioga County legislator in 1988 and retired from that elective position in 1998, having served the last two years as chairman of the Tioga County Legislature.While in Newark Valley, Dom was a member of the Village Planning Board and a trustee of the Newark Valley Historical Society. He served on the boards of Tioga United Way, Tioga Opportunity Programs Inc., St. Johns Pastoral Council and the Northern Tioga RO-KI Club. He was also active in Boy Scout Troop 30 for 25 years. In 1981 he received the Baden-Powell Boy Scout Councils Silver Beaver Award for distinguished service to youth. Dom was predeceased by his wife Jane (Salwoski) DAngelo in 1995, and his sister Loretta Forte in 2014. He moved to Williamsville in 1999 with his son John and family. There he joined St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church and its Senior Organization, and volunteered for Boy Scout Troup 440 and Amherst Meals-on-Wheels.Survivors include his son Anthony and his wife Deborah (Tomazin) of Camillus, N.Y., and their daughters Alison and Meredith; his son John and his wife Maureen (Lucey) of Williamsville, N.Y., their son Domenico and daughter Grace, as well as several nieces and nephews and their children, with whom he was very close. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated in Newark Valley at St. John the Evangelist Church at 10 am Saturday, March 7. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Boy Scout Troop 30 c/o John Maule 110 Allison Hill Rd, Newark Valley NY 13811 or St. John the Evangelist Church, c/o Blessed Trinity Parish, 600 Main St., Owego, NY 13827.
