Dennis William Carlin, 64, of Newark Valley, died at home on Friday, April 11, 2014, after a brief battle with cancer. He was predeceased by his father, Paul William Carlin, from whom he learned a strong work ethic, how to work hard and honestly, and also his brother, David "The Peacock" Carlin, a victim of muscular dystrophy. Denny was employed for many years in the automotive paint business, but most recently worked for 17 years for New York Lottery. He was proud of the many honors and awards he received from the Lottery while giving his retailers the very best service he could. Aside from his family, Dennys great passion was 1955-1957 Chevrolets, of which he owned several during his life. In the early 1980s, he co-founded the Triple Cities Classic Chevy Club, and loved working on and driving his cars, passing that love onto his daughters and granddaughter. Denny felt it was his obligation to be involved in his community, and he was active in the Village of Newark Valley as a Village Trustee and Deputy Mayor, putting in "just a couple of meetings a month." Denny was a sweet, generous and loving husband, Dad, and Grandpa, and treasured every opportunity he had to be with his girls and grandchildren. He especially valued his relationships with his brother and sisters, and was a really good sport about the many huge projects that he got roped into, mostly by his wife. Denny was deeply loved and is survived by his wife of 36 years, Sandra; his three amazing daughters, Heather (Edward) Stamper, Jacqueline Carlin, and Michele (Thomas) Virtue, and their families, including five wonderful grandchildren: Takayla Carlin, who took seriously her responsibility to "make Grandpa laugh every day," Dalton and Pacey Virtue, and Timothy and Elijah Stamper. He is also survived by his mother, Beverly Carlin, and his siblings: Dianne Sue (Robert) Knowles, Daniel (Sibyl) Carlin, and Deborah (Stephen) Hubbert; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. His family is grateful to Dr. Bruce Bowling, Dr. Ron Harris and his staff at Broome Oncology, and in particular to Sue Roessner of Lourdes Hospice for her dedication in making Dennys last hours comfortable and peaceful. The family will receive friends at MacPherson Funeral Home, 5 Whig Street, Newark Valley on Monday, April 14, from 1-3 and 6-8 pm. Funeral services will be held at First United Methodist Church, 63 S. Main Street, Newark Valley at 11 am on Tuesday with Rev. Nancy J. Adams officiating. Interment will be at Hope Cemetery. Contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to one of Dennys favorite charities, Project Neighbor, 70 So. Main St, Newark Valley, NY.
