Daniel L. Cawley
of Newark Valley
Daniel L. Cawley, known affectionately as Dan to his friends and Pops to his family, passed away peacefully at his home in Newark Valley, NY, on February 15, 2024. Born on April 14, 1941, in Endicott, New York, Dan's journey through life was marked by devotion to his loved ones, a passion for the outdoors, and a career that showcased his exceptional skills and work ethic.
Dan leaves behind his loving and devoted wife of nearly 62 years, Patricia “Treach”, who was the cornerstone of his life. Together, they raised a family that includes their children Denny (Kerri) Cawley, Todd (Sheryl) Cawley, Daphne Cawley Wagner (Rob), Greg (Marna) Cawley, and Jason (Lauren) Cawley. His pride and joy were further multiplied through his special grandchildren—Jacob, Erin, Kelly, Eric (Hannah), Jackie (Andrew) McCutchon, Grace, Ethan, Everett, and Gabe—and great-grandchildren Allison, Bennett, and Ellarie. Dan also held a cherished place in his heart for Nate, Cooper, and Mikenze, who were like his own grandchildren.
Survived by his brothers Vince (Cindy) Cawley, John (Wanda) Cawley, and sister Jean Ray Stull, along with brother-in-law Joe Knapick, Dan's life was enriched by a large extended family. His numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and their families, including Joe, Jen, Becky, Ben (Erin), and Mandy (Tyler), were a testament to the love and kinship he fostered. His best friend, Mark Bailey, and family, held a special place in his life, with weekly visits that were always a highlight for Dan. Patricia's extended family also survives him. Preceding him in death were his parents, Charles C. and D. Lucille Cawley, his brother Rodney C. Cawley, and sister Judith Knapick.
A proud graduate of the Vestal High School class of 1959, Dan dedicated 34 years of service as a Senior Photo Engineer before retiring. His professional life was a reflection of his meticulous nature and commitment to excellence.
Dan's interests were as diverse as they were engaging. He was an avid outdoorsman who found solace in hunting and fishing. A craftsman at heart, Dan's woodworking skills were a source of great personal accomplishment and joy. Riding his Goldwing, listening to country music, and embracing the simplicity of life were among his favorite pastimes.
Above all, Dan's greatest pride lay in his family. He reveled in the simple pleasure of receiving a call from his kids asking, "Hey Dad, can you…"—a testament to his ever-present role as their problem-solver and hero. Dan was a constant fixture at his children and grandchildren's school and sporting events, providing a calm and calming presence that was his trademark.
Described by those who knew him as loving, kind, and generous, Dan's character was the embodiment of the quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson: "To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded." Dan's life was indeed a success, measured by the love he gave and the perspective and guidance to others. His ability to listen, offer sage advice, and maintain a cheerful demeanor will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
