Cora Lee Ahonen, 95, a 50 year resident of Owego, died on July 9, 2016 at her home where she had received comfort and love by her caregivers. Born in Indianapolis, IN, she was a daughter of the late Benjamin and Sarah Stone. She was also predeceased by her infant sister, her husband of 44 years, Donald Leo Ahonen and her son James Ahonen. Her daughter Denise Ahonen of Holt,MI survives as well as several cousins.Mrs. Ahonen graduated from Decatur Central High School, Central Business College, earned a BS in Education from Miami University and an MS in Guidance from SUNY, Oneonta. She retired from Newark Valley Central School District where she had been employed as a High School Guidance Counselor. Mrs. Ahonen was a member of the Owego United Methodist Church; The Social Services Advisory Board; Eastern Star Chapter 195; PEO Chapter B and served on the Boards of the Red Cross, Tioga County Historical Society and United Way. She was also a member of the County Parole Board and the Selective Services Board for 20 years and served as a volunteer at Robert Packer Hospital for 10 years. She was an avid reader; enjoyed her weekly Bridge Games with The Girls and was very grateful for the help she received from her friends and neighbors as well as the companionship of her pets.There will be no local services. Graveside services will be held at the family plot in the West Newton Cemetery, Indiana on Friday, July 22, 2016 at 10 oclock in the morning.
