Claude F. Canfield, 95, of Richford, passed away peacefully on Nov. 7, 2014.Claude is survived by: his son Glenn and wife Bonnie Canfield; grandchildren: DeForest (Linda), Duane (Stephanie) and Daryl Canfield, Dedrea Scalza; great grandchildren: Evan, Bradley, Delray, Dadeon and Derrick Canfield, Marissa and Carina Scalza; his very special friend, Ethel Smith; brother Charlie and his wife Doris Canfield, sister Evelyn Fritz; daughter-in-law, Donna Canfield, many nieces and nephews. Claude was predeceased by his parents: Claude P. and Vinnie E. Canfield; his beloved wife, Lucia; his son, Donald and his siblings: Robert, Ralph, Clare and Sarah.Claude began his employment career at Howland Brothers in Berkshire, then served in the US Army Air Corps during WW II . Following his discharge, he was employed at Ithaca Gun Company for 18 years until he established his own contracting business and became a well-known carpenter throughout the area. He served his community as Town of Richford Assessor for 15 years and as Councilman for 18 years. Claude was an avid bowler, a member of the So. Tier Gas Engine Club and following his retirement the Richford and Harford Sr. Citizens Clubs. He enjoyed antique cars, car racing, all sports and was a dedicated Yankee Fan. Most of all, Claude enjoyed living and making many friends all along the way..including, for the past year, at the Groton community Health Care Center where he was voted President of the Residents Assoc! His mischievous grin and infectious laugh will be greatly missed.Family and friends will gather at the MacPherson Funeral Home in Newark Valley on Friday from 2-4 pm to share stories and memories. Military Honors will be accorded at 4 pm followed by a Memorial Service with Rev. James Willard officiating. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Richford, at the convenience of the family.
