Betty Jane Northrup, R.N., 81, was united with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, February 2, 2016, passing peacefully with her family by her side. Betty was greeted and welcomed into Heaven by her beloved husband John E. (Jack) Northrup in 2012; cherished son John B Northrup in 1999; and loved daughter-in-law Judy Northrup in 2015. Betty is survived by her children: son Larry E. Northrup of Fernandina Beach, FL; son and daughter-in-law Mark R. and Mary S. Northrup, Rochester, NY; and daughter and friend Teresa Northrup and Jackie Shaw of Baltimore, MD; her grandchildren James R. Northrup and Laura J. Northrup of Rochester, NY, Angela (Jack) Bowden; great-grandchildren, Taylor, Storm, Kristen, Tina and Sara.Betty was born in Elmira NY, the daughter of the late Chase and Beatrice Knowles. She was a graduate of Elmira Southside High School and the Arnot Ogden School of Nursing. She completed her clinical training in Buffalo and Binghamton, NY. On August 12, 1955, she married the love of her life John E. Northrup and together they shared 57 years of marriage until his passing in September of 2012. They started their life together in Hornell, NY while Jack attended Alfred Tech. They moved to Albuquerque, NM when Jack was employed by Sandia National Labs. The family relocated to the region on West Creek Road in the mid-1960s, providing a rural upbringing filled with farming, education, and fun!Betty was a devoted woman of faith, and attended St. Pauls Episcopal Church in Owego, NY and Speedsville, NY, where she was a member in both choirs. Betty enjoyed spending time in her flower and vegetable gardens, making wedding and graduation cakes and working on all types of crafts. Besides the many charitable organizations she and Jack supported, Betty was a tireless supporter and fundraiser for both the American Diabetes Association and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Betty and Jack faithfully walked every day, no matter where they were. She loved spending time with Jack and the family at Keuka Lake, vacationing there for many years. She helped support her son John when he opened his own restaurant in Norwich, NY. She volunteered at the Bement-Billings Farmstead Museum. She was kind, giving and always helped those in need. She loved her children and grandchildren dearly. As a mom, she spent countless hours raising her children: cooking, laundry, cheerleading, parenting, driving instructor, referee, mending touch, providing discipline and guidance, all encompassed with love. Betty will be forever remembered and missed.Family and friends are invited to attend a period of visitation on Saturday, February 6th from 11 to 1 at the MacPherson Funeral Home, 5 Whig St., Newark Valley. A celebration of her life will be held at 2 oclock at St. Pauls Episcopal Church, Owego, NY with Father Geoff Doolittle. In loving memory of Betty, memorials may be sent to the Juvenile Diabetes Fund, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, and the St. Pauls Episcopal Church elevator fund.
